Elephant Hill set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German owners, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spare no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline, and boasts one of the finest winery restaurants in NZ!

The Elephant Hill “Icon” range is the absolute pinnacle of wine making at Elephant Hill and only ever released in the greatest vintages. With their meticulous standards you know it has to be better than good, it has to be near damn perfect!

Hieronymus is the name of the Bordeaux blend produced under their “Icon” range and this is from the 2020 Hawke’s Bay vintage. Think of this as wine fit for a king! Or a lord mayor. Hieronymus is actually a nod to a famous ancestor of the Weiss family, Hieronymus Ebner von Eschenbach who was Lord Mayor of Nuremberg in the 16th century.

Produced using the very best fruit (39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc) from their Gimblett Gravels Stone vineyard and aged for 24 months in French oak, 54% in expensive new oak.

As you’d expect it’s had near perfect scores from the critics that had a change to put it to the test…

95/100 (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region. Dense, almost chewy wine with chocolate/mocha, cedar, charcuterie and leather flavours. Bordeaux-like red with cellaring potential”

5 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“A wine with a real sense of soul, it is already approachable, but set for a very long life. Best drinking 2027+.”

Hieronymus is a cellar worthy red for all fine wine snobs or. wine lovers with deep pockets. The Elephant Hill crew reckon this can be cellar for 15 years plus from vintage.
