One of the most iconic red wine labels this country has ever produced meets the vintage of a lifetime – a piece of New Zealand wine history is here!
TOM is the pinnacle of winemaking at Church Road and only ever released in the greatest of vintages (the last release being 2009) and 2013 was exactly that. The driest year in Hawke’s Bay in over 70 years and near perfect growing conditions leaving winemakers and critics nicknaming it “the vintage of a lifetime“.
TOM is Church Road’s tribute to one of New Zealand’s winemaking legends, Tom McDonald. The very best parcels of fruit from their Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett vineyards, a meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the winemaking process, aged for 22 months in oak, a truly world class example of Bordeaux blend red that’s a fitting tribute to Tom, nicknamed “The Father of red winemaking in New Zealand“.
Tom released NZ’s first commercial Cabernet Sauvignon in 1949, in later years pioneering New Zealand Chardonnay. By the 1960’s his Cabernets were being compared to some of the First Growth wines of Bordeaux. So yep, there’s certainly a bit of pressure when it comes to a release under the TOM label!
But Church Road’s chief winemaker Chris Scott is certainly pretty excited about this release, and why wouldn’t you be! “Unquestionably our best TOM Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot to date from one of the most favourable Hawke’s Bay vintages on record. This is a wine of subtle power, density and seamless, linear progression. A multi-dimensional blend that simultaneously shows great depth of dark, brooding flavour whilst expressing a haunting array of gentle perfume, which for me, is the ultimate expression of great Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.”
Each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a stunning Church Road TOM gift box. If you’re a TOM collector, this is the one you’ve been waiting for! If you’re new to TOM, what a way to start! This is a wine they’ll be talking about for years to come.
Global demand will be nuts for this wine which is why the winery has issued it on strict allocation. We’ve secured a small shipment but once it’s gone, it’s gone. Recommended drinking between 2019-2027.
