Elephant Hill set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German founders, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spared no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline.

The Elephant Hill “Icon” range is the absolute pinnacle of wine making at Elephant Hill and only ever released in the greatest vintages. With their meticulous standards you know it has to be better than good, it has to be near damn perfect!

Hieronymus is the name of the Bordeaux blend produced under their “Icon” range and this is from the 2021 Hawke’s Bay vintage. Think of this as wine fit for a king! Or a lord mayor. Hieronymus is actually a nod to a famous ancestor of the Weiss family, Hieronymus Ebner von Eschenbach who was Lord Mayor of Nuremberg in the 16th century.

Produced using the very best fruit (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc) from their Gimblett Gravels Stone vineyard and aged for 22 months in French oak, 50% in expensive new oak.

As you’d expect it’s had near perfect scores from the critics that had a change to put it to the test…

98/100 (Sam Kim)
“Impressive and captivating.”

97/100 (Cam Douglas MS)
“Lengthy, complex and delicious. I could drink a glass of this wine tonight with dinner, I also know it will age well with best drinking likely from 2029 through 2039.”

94/100 & Top Rank Award (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Rich, savoury wine with chocolate/mocha, smoky oak, cedar, old leather and brandy character, possibly from the high alcohol of 14.5% . Good ageing potential.”

94/100 & Top Rank Award (Huon Hoke, The Real Review)
“Deep colour with a trace of purple in the rim; the bouquet is very merlot/cabernet, with fragrant leafy/tobacco notes and savoury elegance all round. The tannins are fine and very present but balanced. A nod towards St Emilion.”

94/100 & Top Rank Award (Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review)
“Has the sheer intensity to cellar for the long-term.”

Hieronymus is a cellar worthy red for all fine wine snobs or. wine lovers with deep pockets. The Elephant Hill crew reckon this can be cellar for 15 years plus from vintage.
