Ok, so we know that Villa Maria are one of the best Chardonnay producers in NZ (ok, probably the best) and that they win a hell of a lot of medals (in fact they’re NZ’s most awarded winery) but it says it all when their sub-$20 Cellar Selection label consistently picks up the kind of gongs most wineries would call Reserve and charge you $30 plus for!
Their 2024 release is just out of the traps and they’d tell you it’s got flavours of grilled peach, nectarine stone fruit, a silken textured mouth feel with subtle mealy flavours and wonderful acidity. Sheesh, we just lick our lips after every glass of this simply delicious soft, creamy Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay that’s hard to beat for the money.
A winner every year. Pair it with white meats and seafoods in rich dishes, cheeses and salads.
