Que Syrah Syrah! Whatever will be, will be, but if you love Syrah Syrah you really ought to be drinking more of me. Te Mata Estate Syrah
That’s because Syrah’s a wine style that’s on the rise in Aotearoa and if you’re into Pinot Noir (who isn’t?) this is a style you’ll love. Hawke’s Bay is leading the charge with this variety and, as Michael Cooper puts it, most of the lower priced options are “typically floral, vibrantly fruity and smooth, with the easy drinking nature of most Pinot Noirs.”
Te Mata are one of the Bay’s most iconic producers and their Estate Syrah is one of the more reliable under Syrahs on the market. They also make one of NZ’s most iconic Syrahs, the Bullnose, but if $45-50 is a bit steep and you’re after a more approachable, easy going style, this guy’s a sure bet.
This latest 2024 vintage scored 4 Stars and selected as Michael Cooper’s “Buy of the Week” in his weekly wine column for the NZ Listener in March 2026. Cooper said “This full-flavoured, smooth red was barrel-aged for a year. Deeply coloured, with a floral, spicy bouquet, it is fresh, full-bodied and supple, with very good depth of plum, spice and black pepper flavours showing lots of youthful drive. Vibrantly fruity and clearly varietal, it should be at its best 2028+. (13% alc/vol) $24-$29”
Like a lot of Syrah you’ll find this one goes with most red meats but especially game meats, Mediterranean cuisine and soft cheeses.
