Who said you need to spend a fortune to get a good bottle of red? Not us and definitely not the experienced tasting panel at James Halliday’s Wine Companion in Australia.
They swirl, sip and spit their way through tens of thousands of wines every year and in 2025 they whittled a long list of wines down to their ultimate “50 best Australian wines for $20 and under”. And this seriously good value Stonehaven Stepping Stone Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 made the cut! In fact these guys had an impressive three wines make the list!
It was one of only four Cabernets to make the Top 50 and the judges said “Blackberries, sage leaf and cassis. Black mulberries and cedar. A hint of choc-mint slice, lemon gum and tea tree. The wine is combined through a lick of new oak that adds richness and clove spice. It finishes with chocolate chips and good espresso. Superb value for money”.
A Double Gold medal winner at the Cairns Wine Show and International Cool Climate Wine Show competitions across the ditch, it’s also had solid reviews from other critics on both sides of the Tasman…
5 stars, 94/100 (Sam Kim)
“It’s varietally expressive and well defined by firm structure, showing blackcurrant, tobacco, pepper spice and cedary oak characters on the nose. The palate has richness as well as complexity, offering terrific drinking”.
91/100 (Ken Gargett, WinePilot)
“Fruit here was sourced from a trio of sub-regions, Coonawarra, Padthaway and Mundulla. 30% of the wine saw a year in French oak. Deep purple/maroon hue, this is a slightly more savoury style then some of its peers. We have warm earth notes. Licorice, chocolate, cloves, black cherries and bay leaves. There is good grip here, bright acidity and decent length. Good value. Enjoy over the next 6 to 8 years”.
Located in South Australia’s Limestone Coast region, Stonehaven are best known for being producers of Cabernet and Shiraz (you might even find stocks of their internationally acclaimed Malbec on our site…if it’s not already sold out!) but here’s yet another example of how these guys are fast gaining a rep as a top value Aussie producer with their Stepping Stone Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc labels also made the Top 50 list!
To ensure consistently across vintages they used fruit from mature Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards across three sub regions of the Limestone Coast – Padthaway, Mundalla to the north and Coonawarra.
Drink now to 5-6 years from vintage and pair with a lamb, slow cooked meat, pasta and meatballs or any grilled red meat coming off the BBQ!
