If you know much about iconic Aussie red labels (especially anything with the words Cabernet and Coonawarra slapped on the label) you’ll know St Hugo. They’re up there with the likes of Wynns, Riddoch and Petaluma as the Coonawarra’s most premium Cabernet labels.
And if you know nothing about iconic Aussie labels but just fancy laying your hands on a world class, age worthy red (drink now to 2040) with a bottle that’s individually numbered, well here’s your guy.
This is their 2020 vintage and it is quite simply a class act from woah to go…
93/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Matured in 41% new French oak for 18 months. There is a familiarity that comes with wines from such esteemed estate and St Hugo is one of them. Here you’ll be greeted with your old friend the wild blackberry bush and shake hands with dark cherries and plums. Oak firmly lays a hand on your back in recognition and support, with old cedar trunk and boot polish. A bit of cheek from the tea tree and thyme stem. Tannins are crafty and pave the way for a long friendship. It’s a wine you can count on in the good times and the bad.”
We were taking no chances though so have painstakingly tasted several bottles recently (yes, it’s a bloody hard job sometimes)…we can confirm it’s A-grade stuff! Darkly coloured, full bodied Coonawarra Cabernet, loads of dark berry and cassis flavours with cellaring potential up to 2042!
It’s a class act.

Damn, you're looking young for your age!
