Trocken-beeren-what? It’s “TROK-en-BEER-en-OWS-lay-zeh” and it’s a rare, ultra-premium dessert wine and the highest of four levels of dessert wine classification in its home country of Germany. The word “trocken” in German means “dry”, “Beeren” is “berries” and “Auslese” is “selection.”

New Zealander Warwick Foley and German Edel Everling flung open the doors of Johanneshof Cellars back in 1991 showcasing their incredible winemaking talents after learning their trade in the world famous Rheingau region of Germany.

Located at Koromiko midway between Blenheim and Picton the Johanneshof name has over 35 years experience of hand crafting, award winning, premium Marlborough wine. Their Gewürztraminer is without a doubt one of Aotearoa’s finest year in, year out and one we keep in our wine racks at all times!

They were also the first in NZ to create an underground rock cellar, blasted by coal miners into the rock under their Maybern vineyard, named after Warwick’s parents May and Bernard.

We’ve secured a very small amount of stock of this extremely special nectar! Here’s what Warwick and Edel had to say about this 2025 release – “Trockenbeerenauslese is ultra concentrated in flavour, with a complex texture and rich viscosity. The intense bouquet of apricots, honey and exotic floral characters is mirrored on the palate. Sweet fig and dried apricot flavours unfold to reveal Manuka smoke and honey and spice.”

“The lusciously high natural sweetness (160g/l) is superbly balanced with strong, but well integrated acidity (8.6 g/l). The finish is long and smooth and lingers for ever. Already a very complex dessert wine this exotically spicy nectar will easily age for decades to come.”
