Elephant Hill only release their sleek looking Reserve range when the quality hits the mark. When they say that, they mean it. These guys set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German owners, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spare no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline, and boasts one of the finest winery restaurants in NZ!
It’s also probably why we this is only the fifth Elephant Hill Reserve Bordeaux blend red since 2009!
And in true Elephant Hill fashion they’ve crafted a wine that is simply stunning, receiving top marks from a handful of top NZ wine writers, including Michael Cooper who gave it 5 Stars and said “The classy 2017 vintage (5*) was estate-grown and hand-harvested in the Gimblett Gravels and the Bridge Pa Triangle, and matured in French oak casks (35 per cent new). Fragrant and full-bodied, it is deeply coloured, with concentrated blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, excellent complexity, and a finely structured, very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2023+.”
A blend from two of the three vineyards the Elephant crew own in Hawke’s Bay (Gimblett Gravels and the Bridge Pa) made up of 52% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and a 6% splash of Malbec.
Aged for 26 months in oak this is a true full bodied Bordeaux style red that has the legs to be left in the cellar for another decade or longer.
