Wow, what the heck?! It’s Hecula, that’s what. A dark, powerful, full bodied Spanish red that’s almost as big as the saving.
With container loads of new wine on the way this importer is slashing prices to quickly make space. It’s first in best dressed so if darkly fruited, dense, brooding, powerful reds are your thing, it’s time to suit up.
Hecula is produced by the Castano family in the south-east of Spain in a region called Yecla. The grape is Monastrell (also called Mourvedre in France and Mataro in Aussie) and it’s absolutely at home in this part of Spain. With hot summers, long cold winters and long periods of drought – most grapes wouldn’t stand a chance. But in this environment Monastrell brings its A-game!
We could rave on all day about the rich, spicy dark fruits and silky smooth tannins – or make lame jokes about it being one “Hecula” of a deal. Maybe we’ll just let a couple of local wine gurus lay down their professional opinion…
5 Stars, 93/100 (Sam Kim)
“This consistently excellent label delivers another stylish rendition…gorgeous aromas of dark fruit..the wine is flavoursome and generous.”
4 Stars, 18/20 (Raymond Chan)
“This is a fulsome, richly flavoured Monastrell…layers of spices and dark herbs”
Elsewhere right now this one’s selling for over $23, even on special at around $15-20 it’s awesome value. At $12.99 Hecula smashes it out of the ground.
With a good 3-4 years to go left in this one there’s plenty of reason to stash that extra case up your sleeve. You’ll be glad you did!
