Leonardo Da Vinci – Italian painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, biologist, botanist and writer. But he wasn’t a wine maker. So it’s a bloody nice gesture that someone named a wine range after him!

This is the Da Vinci “i Capolavori” series which features famous artworks on the label – this one featuring Vergine delle Rocce (“Virgin of the Rocks”) and sometimes referred to as Madonna of the Rocks. The portrait features the Virgin Mary (not Madonna!) and Da Vinci’s original, unrestored portrait hangs in the Louvre in Paris.

And if you thought the label was a bit genius then you’ll be stoked to know what’s inside the bottle is too – this is a Tuscan masterpiece! Following strict Italian wine laws this Chianti (key-an-tee) Riserva is a predominantly Sangiovese (85%) and Merlot (10%) blend, aged in French and American oak for 10 months before further bottle aged prior to release.

Now with several years further bottle age under its belt this is a Chianti Riserva that’s really hitting its straps. Dark red fruits, dried herbs, vanilla and cinnamon spice – it’s a treat alright!

If it’s Tuscan wine think Tuscan food! Chianti and Chianti Riserva are amazing food wines. The high acidity in the red cuts through richer, fatty dishes nicely and stands up to tomato based foods too – think pizzas and pastas. But don’t be afraid to pair this up with a quality porterhouse steak too!
