The Great Western. It’s a famous railway, it’s the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, it’s an album by the Manic Street Preachers, it’s one of Victoria’s secrets.

No, not the saucy lingerie place, the cool climate sub region in Victoria, Australia. Best’s are the winery and they recently notched up an impressive 150th candle on their birthday cake. Yep, since 1866 Best’s have been producing award winning wine in the region.

This is their Bin No.1 Shiraz, using fruit from the Great Western area, and it’s a great introduction to the cool climate style Shiraz produced in this part of the wine world.

We’re talking about a more elegant take on the classic Aussie variety – medium bodied, spicy, peppery with plenty of potential to age well, right up to 2030 and beyond. Awarded a score of 91/100 by two of Aussie’s leading wine scribblers, James Halliday and Huon Hooke MW.
