First released in 1962 the now iconic (and always seriously bloody good!) Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz label remains one of the most sought after in the premium Penfolds Bin range.
Almost 60 years on since its debut release and Bin 128 remains today a Shiraz from the Coonawarra region of South Australia. With its unique terra rossa red clay over limestone soils this cool climate region is a great contrast to others in the Penfolds Bin line-up like the warm climate Bin 28 Shiraz.
This is the latest 2024 release of Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz and it’s another cracking release with real cellaring potential…
94/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“One thing that left a strong impression on me in this year’s Penfolds collection tasting was the quality of the wines from Coonawarra. This year’s Bin 128 release is brightly coloured and shows aromas of satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry fruits over hints of baking spices, cracked black pepper, violets, cedar, fruitcake, iced black tea, dark chocolate and earth. Some pan juices and dried citrus on the palate, along with a ferruginous note, chalky, fine tannins and an abundant energy as the wine trails slowly away.”
92/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Very deep, dark and youthful purple-red-colour. Very firm tannins and a big, bold, chunky palate, altogether at the bigger and more grippy end of Coonawarra shiraz style. Very dense and solid. Superripe fruit; masses of tannin. Needs years.”
Drink this one now until 2044. For the best food match try Moroccan lamb or beef.
