“The best of both worlds – a tasty combination of vibrant berry fruit and savoury, Mediterranean herbs and spice. The style is soft, easy to drink and so very versatile with food exemplifying why this variety is Sicily’s most widely consumed red.” Steve Bennett MW, Importer.
Angelo Nero d’Avola Sicilia is imported into NZ by Master of Wine Steve Bennett and as another Master of Wine Bob puts it – “Steve has built his reputation on the quality of his imports.”
The wine is made by MGM aka Mondo del Vino. They’re a world renowned wine company of almost 30 years and the first in Europe to embrace the EU green policy, they’re previous winners of No.1 European Wine Producer at one of the largest wine award shows in Europe, the Mundus Vini Awards.
Nero D’Avola (pronounced “nair-oh davo-la”) is the most planted variety on the island of Sicily off the coast of mainland Italy. Nero is best known for being a bold, fruit driven style red with typical flavours of black cherries, plums, licorice and spice! They’re also incredible value for money and a bit under rated in our opinion!
93/100 (Sam Kim)
“Succulent fruit flavours, supple texture and a plump mouthfeel, beautifully supported by silky tannins, finishing smooth and fruity. At its best: now to 2029”
91/100 (Paul Tudor MW)
“Spicy aromatics of plum and fruitcake, a hint of dark chocolate. Generous mouthfeel, some savoury complexity even on the finish – I don’t think that you are going to find a better expression of this variety anywhere in NZ (and certainly a most stylish wine, packaging-wise).”
This is a style you’ll happily glug with or without food, if you do want to bust it out at the dinner table try it with grilled and roasted red meats, burgers antipasto and cheeses.
