Here’s a thirty something to lay your hands on! It’s ripe, juicy and flavour packed little number from Spain. Thirty five is how old on average the vines are to produce Anciano’s 35 Year Old Vines Garnacha.
If you’re a regular slurper of Spanish reds you might be familiar with the Anciano label. The wines are made by Norrel Robertson (a Scottish Master of Wine with a Kiwi connection) and imported into NZ by Steve Bennett (an NZ Master of Wine). Incredible value for money and smart packaging is what they’ve built the name on.
Big, bold and full of flavour is how we like to think of this one. Or as the judges at London’s International Wine Challenge called it with their 93/100 score – “Ripe, juicy palate complemented by silky tannins“.
It also made Bob Campbell’s Top 10 Reds of 2018 Under $25. Bob called it “A good value red with character”.
From Calatayud in the south west of Spain, a portion of the wine is given four months aging in oak to add a touch of complexity. But really this wine is all about the juicy, fruit forward flavours and silky smooth finish. Get your thirty-something mates round for a Tapas evening and serve with barbecued meats, lamb, duck etc.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
