Once or twice a year a Pinot Noir deal will land in our laps that’s just so, so good we have to jump into it boots ‘n’ all and scream it from the rooftops. Heads up – this is one of those!
A label refresh means this Central Otago producer has slashed stocks of their 5 Star, 93/100 rated Central Otago Pinot called “Five Boroughs” – and boy are you in for a treat with this one. This wine was made to sell just under the $30 per bottle mark, it’s now up for grabs at a snip under $20. Nuts!
Named “Five Boroughs” after the five Central Otago sub regions they source the fruit from – as well as the phrase for the neighbourhoods of New York city that the Kalex owner calls home!
In his 93/100 review, Wine Orbit’s Sam Kim said “Beautifully composed and expressed, the wine shows dark cherry, thyme, toasted spice and subtle vanilla notes on the nose, leading to a delightfully weighted palate that delivers succulent fruit flavours together with spicy nuances, backed by fine tannins, making it immediately appealing and drinkable. At its best: now to 2024.”
Kalex are a premium Central Otago producer founded by Alex Kaufman, a Polish American businessman, entrepreneur and holocaust survivor. He arrived in the US with nothing but the clothes on his back and a quarter in his shoe. His later success in business and love for wine lead him to NZ and specifically Central Otago, where he started the Kalex label.
With the price of fruit in Otago going up quality Central Pinots at this price are dime a dozen. Grab a case, tell your mates, you’ll be back for two or three more!
