Ponui Island – population of nine, the odd boy scout camp and home to New Zealand’s only feral donkey breed, the Ponui Donkey! It’s also home to the world famous (on Waiheke) Man O’ War Exiled Pinot Gris!
Located south east of Waiheke Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf this is where the MOW crew have been sourcing fruit for their most prized Exiled Pinot Gris for many years now. To say the wine has a bit of a cult like following would be an understatement!
There’s a fair bit of excitement around this 2025 release of Exiled Pinot Gris. The Man O’ War crew said “Utterly drinkable, yet far from simple – the 2025 Exiled is a compelling off-dry white, and a standout summer companion. A wine of clarity, coastal character, and quiet confidence.”
This is a lush, sweeter style Pinot Gris (24 grams of residual sugar for you wine nerds out there) that’s got all the usual Gris flavours of pear and peach but with a heap of honeysuckle in there too! In fact, the MOW crew have previously described Exiled as bordering on a tiki drink! Enjoy this one over the next 3-4 years with spicy Asian cuisine, seafood and chicken dishes.
