The flagshig wine of one Australia’s First Families of Wine – the 12 founding family owned wineries across the ditch. This is the prestigeous and extremely posh Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz!
Make no mistake. This is no ordinary bottle of Shiraz. This is a rare and fine Barossa Shiraz from old vines dating back to 1854 making it some of the oldest Shiraz plantings anywhere in the world.
The wine has been matured in unique 100 litre French oak octaves made by the Yalumba Master Coopers, matured for 21 months before further bottle maturation in Yalumba’s cool marble cellars before release.
This is the 2018 release of this world famous Barossa red and as expected it’s had near perfect critic reviews…
99/100 (Andrew Caillard MW)
“Medium deep crimson. Magnificent pure blackberry blackberry dark chocolate aromas with vanilla roasted chestnut notes. Beautifully concentrated and inky deep with beautiful pure dark berry fruits fine slinky animated tannins and perfectly integrated new mocha, vanilla oak. Finishes classically firm with superb mineral length. Very seductive and impressive with a beautiful scent of place. Wonderful fruit definition, purity and precision with the density and torque for long term aging. Almost perfect symmetry.”
97/100 (Georgie Hindle, Decanter)
“Fragranced and aromatically complex on the nose – beguiling and totally captivating red berries, clove, vanilla, liquorice and wild herbs. This has an inky density to it, weighty and fully textured but with amazing purity of fruit. Bright and piercing acidity adds to the overall expression with tannins that are refined yet carry a sense of opulence and seduction. Clean and sleek, wide, full and mouthwatering with liquorice, cherry blossom and strawberry fruit all the way through. Delicious.”
97/100 (Dave Brookes, James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Yalumba’s flagship offering is made from shiraz split across vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys with an average age of 80 years. A portion is matured for 23 months in 30% new French oak barriques and hogsheads and the balance in one-year-old (and older) American octaves, French barriques and hogsheads. Deep crimson with ripe blackberry, black cherry, satsuma plum and blueberry fruits cut with baking spices, vanillin oak, cedar, licorice, dark chocolate, clove and violets. The fruit glistens on the palate, beautifully weighted and graceful in its shape, with ripe tannins melting into the wine and a shimmering acidity that provides cadence and shines a light on the pristine fruit. This will cellar beautifully, but my goodness it is lovely to drink at the moment. Another epic Octavius release.”
96/100 & Top Rank Award (Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review)
“Heady notes of vanilla pod, blackcurrant jam and spiced red plums excite and set the bar high for this wine. The palate delivers. A suave flush of velvety fruit flows through, primary flavours dominate while subtle tertiary notes of tobacco are creeping in. The tannins envelop the cushioned core, leaving a trail of bitter chocolate and salted licorice flavours. This is an outstanding vintage for Octavius and a worthy cellar candidate. With time it will gain more composure and complexity”
Decanting before enjoying is recommended. Drink this glorious red anytime from now up until 25 years from vintage.
