Apparently Wolf Blass Grey Label Cabernet Shiraz was the first wine ever made by Wolf Blass back in 1967. Wolf Blass being Wolfgang Franz Otto Blass a German born boy who ran away from school at the age of 15, he was told he had two choices, either go back to school or start a 3 year apprentice with a wine business. Good on ya Wolfie!
Keeping things nice and simple (probably because he left school at 15) Wolf Blass has kindly colour coded his wines. This Grey Label, which used to be Brown, sits above the flash Gold Label and just below the extremely flash Black label. Got it?
Since its first vintage over fifty years ago Wolf has used selected vineyards throughout the Langhorne Creek sub region of South Australia for this one. He loves this region for its ability to produce “fragrant wines of intense flavour and fine structure.”
An absolute classic in the line-up of Wolf Blass wines this is your typical full bodied Aussie number, deep and dark purple-like colour in the glass, packed full of dark fruits wrapped around a smooth texture. Scored an impressive 93/100 by The Real Review’s Stuart Knox who said “Inky core to a deep purple rim. Blackberry, mocha, and vanilla aromas. A big and weighty red that fills all the corners of the palate. Dark fruit, graphite and bitter chocolate all meld with the firm sandy tannins to carry it long and lingering at the finish”
All class, a prize act from Wolf Blass, this label simply never fails to impress! Gagging for a good lump of meat, something like a lamp shank, delicious. Or chuck it in the cellar and let it develop over the next 10 years or so.
