Vino Pellegrino is the wine project of one Mr Kenny Pellegrino – a Danishman with Italian roots and a passion for finding great value Italian wines from Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Puglia.
This is Vino Pellegrino’s LaForte Appassimento label produced using an Ancient Roman winemaking technique involving partially dried grapes, called appassimento.
A blend of Primitivo, Negroamaro and the lesser known, dark skinned Malvasia Nera grape from Italy’s south eastern Puglia region. Appassimento wines are full bodied, deep and rich in colour, powerful and warming with a variety of intense fruit flavours, aromas and spice. This is utterly delicious and a simply must-try wine!
The higher sugar concentration in the appassimento process also helps to produce higher alcohol, powerful wines – this one packs a punch at 15%!
Here’s a fun Primitivo fact – the name Primitivo comes from the Latin word “primativus” and the old Italian word “primaticcio,” which mean “early ripener” or “first to ripen.” Pair it with red meats, mature cheeses and hearty pasta dishes.
