Anthony Joseph Vidal was just 22 years young when he jumped off the ship from Spain way back in 1888. After purchasing a small section in Hawke’s Bay in 1905 he converted the stables that occupied the land into a wine cellar and hey presto – Vidal Estate was born!
You’ll find the Vidal Reserve range being regularly slurped by travelling visitors to Air NZ’s premium Koru lounges. This is a classy label that looks and tastes the part, clearly to pass the test to be served to those in swanky surroundings!
From a great 2018 Hawke’s Bay vintage and using prized Gimblett Gravels fruit this latest release is an absolute pearler. It’s not hard to see why it won a Gold medal at the NZ Wine of the Year Awards and a seriously, seriously impressive 95/100 rating from Master of Wine Bob Campbell.
So how good is a 95/100 rating from Bob? Put it this way, only four Syrahs reviewed from the 2018 vintage have scored 95 points or higher. Take your pick from Coopers Creek Reserve ($60), Stonecroft Reserve ($60), Trinity Hill L’Eritage ($120) or Vidal Reserve at our very, very modest price.
Talking about this 2018 Vidal Reserve, Bob said “Quite a dense and complex syrah with plum, dark berry, pepper, subtle floral and nutty oak flavours. The wine is cleverly structured with sugar-coated tannins that provide backbone while offering an appealing silkiness. Excellent value at this price ($25).”
Five Star Syrah, Three Star price! Enjoy from now until 2023 and food match it with duck, lamb, beef or hard cheeses.
