Voted Best Red Wine Buy of 2018 in Michael Cooper’s latest Wine Buyer’s Guide. Think of it as the NZ Wine Bible. Coops slurps his way through over 3,000 wines (sheesh, hard job right?) and at the end picks his overall best value White & Red drop.
Vidal’s Reserve Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon from an awesome 2015 Hawke’s Bay vintage is his top red drop. Coops calls it “Deeply coloured, mouthfilling, vibrantly fruity and supple” and goes on to call it “a refined, savoury, age-worthy red, likely to be at its best from 2019 onwards, it’s as classy as many producers’ $40 reds.”
We can tell you two things for sure. One, this red is simply divine for the money. Two, there ain’t a lot of it left. By the time Coops made his big announcement stocks were thin on the ground – we’ve secured a stash but trust us it won’t last!
If you’re down in Hawke’s Bay why not swing by their winery restaurant and treat yourself to a flash meal – try this with their Hawke’s Bay Sous vide Lamb shoulder rack, gremolata couscous, popcorn sweet breads and crispy parsnip! Heaven!
