Anthony Joseph Vidal was just 22 years young when he jumped off the ship from Spain way back in 1888. After purchasing a small section in Hawke’s Bay in 1905 he converted the stables that occupied the land into a wine cellar and hey presto – Vidal Estate was born!
Wind the clock forward a few decades and the Vidal Reserve Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon has become one of the most reliable on the market. In fact just a couple of years ago this label took out Michael Cooper’s Best Buy Red of the Year!
Using Merlot, Cabernet and Malbec fruit from their prized Gimblett Gravels vineyards and given 18 months in French oak this is a darkly fruited, mouth filling and supple red. From a great ’18 vintage, this is textbook Bordeaux blend from the Hawke’s Bay at an everyday rate. This has some impressive awards for a wine priced a little over the $15 mark that’s for sure…

“Red fruits and chewy notes with floral spice on the nose, gripping tannins and generous oak integrating with youthful fruit.”
4 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“A consistently good buy. Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques the 2018 vintage is a blend principally of Merlot (65 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (23 per cent) and Malbec (11 per cent). Full-coloured, it is mouthfilling, with strong, vibrant red-berry and spice flavours, nutty, savoury notes adding complexity, and ripe, supple tannins. A refined red, it should be at its best 2022+.
These are the final stocks of this ripper 2018 vintage, so get into it while you can! Just the style red to bust out when Mum’s Sunday roast is being served at the dinner table.
