You know what they say, never underestimate a dark horse. Especially when you’re literally listed as one of the Top 10 ‘Dark Horse’ wineries by the Aussie wine guru himself Mr James Halliday.
After making wine in Italy and France former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead returned to the McLaren Vale to kick off his own gig with Dad Alan and 94 year old Grandad Frank. They’re the Three Dark Horses, they’re seriously boutique and they’re producing some seriously, seriously good single vineyard Shiraz.
This is Matt’s first release on his newly bought Schuller Road vineyard in the McLaren Vale. Matt is super excited about the fruit coming from this one, in fact he reckons this is his best ‘White Label’ Shiraz since his debut vintage in 2009.
And Halliday is almost as excited as the winemaker himself. Rating these guys a Five Star winery and a Top 10 Dark Horse winery to keep an eye on is no mean feat, Halliday said “‘Moreover, I’m very confident that Matt Broomhead’s venture is destined for greater things in the coming years, as its newly acquired vineyard and onsite winery come on-stream.”
This fruit comes from old vines, it’s al single vineyard fruit and 100% basket pressed (an expensive, labour intensive winery tool used to produce high quality fruit!). Dark berries and spice, soft, rich and plush. You’ll be seriously impressed. The smart money is on this horse yet again. Drink now or cellar for up to a decade from vintage.
