Mills Reef Elspeth Chardonnay is the winery’s flagship Chardonnay. Elspeth (named after the winemaker’s Grandmother, Elspeth Preston) sits right up there with Hawke’s Bay’s wine elite. If it’s Elspeth slapped on the label you know you’ve got one classy little number in your hot little hands!
Scoring 4 Stars in Cuisine magazine’s annual Chardonnay tasting, the judges said “A touch of haze in the glass that shouldn’t cast doubt in your mind that this is anything other than a really enjoyable wine. Mid weighted with lovely focus with stone fruit and ripe citrus and a limestone minerality that gives texture and length.”
This is hand picked fruit from one of their prized single vineyards in the Bride Pa sub region. Aged for 12 months in 100% French oak, 35% in expensive new oak and given 35% malolactic fermentation for a buttery texture. This is a wine released to drink well early on but it’s sure as hell got the legs to go the distance, try 7-8 years from vintage.
