Greywacke (yes, it’s pronounced grey-wacky) is the family wine label of the Judds. You’ll find Greywacke HQ in Omaka, Marlborough producing world class Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and other styles from organically farmed sites.

Head of the family is Kevin Judd – an absolute winemaking legend in his own right and pretty handy with a camera too! Kevin has pursued a parallel career as a photographer and has published several books including “The Landscape of New Zealand Wine”, “The Colour of Wine” and (our favourite) “Wine Dogs New Zealand”.

Born in England and raised in Aussie, Judd moved to NZ in 1983 and would later become the founding winemaker of Cloudy Bay and go on to produce the first 25 vintages.

“Keep it simple and hands-on” – that’s the Greywacke way of thinking. Trust us, the wines are anything but simple!

This is their 2021 release Chardonnay – and trust us when we say this is up there with the best of the best when it comes to Marlborough Chardonnays. It is one hell of a class act…

95/100 & Top Rank Award (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“Intense, tangy chardonnay with lemon curd, white peach, oyster shell, subtle oak and nutty yeast lees flavours. Serious chardonnay with good cellaring potential although it can be appreciated now.”

95/100 (Stuart Knox, The Real Review)
“A serious and powerful wine that has all the volume knobs turned up to 11.”

5 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“The powerful 2021 vintage (5*) was grown principally in the lower reaches of the Brancott Valley and at Fairhall, with smaller amounts from Renwick and Rapaura. Hand-harvested, it was fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Bright, light yellow/green, it has a fragrant, gently smoky bouquet. Notably sturdy and weighty, it has finely balanced acidity and concentrated, ripe stonefruit flavours, complex and savoury. A bolder style than most of the region’s Chardonnays, it should be at its best 2025+.”

A Chardonnay lover’s Chardonnay. Drink now to 2030.
