Elephant Hill are a Hawke’s Bay producer with class and style. They set the bar sky high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German owners, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spare no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline.
They’re one of Hawke’s Bay shining stars and it’s not just the winery that’s flash as, the wines ain’t bad either!
If you love Viognier, boy are you in for a treat! If you haven’t tried Viognier before why not throw yourself in at the deep end and start with something that’s just drizzling in class! You’ll also want to know how to pronounce it – it’s “vee-on-yay“. A lovely dry, rich, balanced white with all the classic Viognier stonefruit flavours of peaches, apricots and nectarines.
Scoring 4 1/2 Stars with critic Michael Cooper, who said “The youthful 2022 vintage (4.5*), estate-grown and hand-picked at Te Awanga, was handled mostly in tanks; 17 per cent of the blend was fermented and matured for 11 months in oak casks. Bright, light lemon/green, it is full-bodied and vibrantly fruity, with strong, vigorous, citrusy flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak adding complexity, balanced acidity and a dry finish. Still unfolding, it should be at its best mid-2025+.”
If you’re in the Bay swing by this place and grab a glass and enjoy the stunning views looking out to sea!
