Nobody has a love affair with Hawke’s Bay wine (especially Chardonnay!) quite like Tim Turvey, the main man at Clearview Estate. He has a stellar line up of wines including his world famous Reserve label (listed as in Michael Cooper’s prestigious “Super Classics” list) and while it’s Chardonnay that he’s best known for they’ve carved out a reputation as a producer of some seriously top high quality Hawke’s Bay reds.
That’s despite being told back in 1988 that it was too cold to grow grapes at the Te Awanga location in Hawkes Bay. Boy, did he show them!
This is the seriously impressive 2024 vintage of Two Pinnacles Reserve Malbec. Named after the initial sighting of two white rocks by Captain James Cook in 1769 – today a single pinnacle remains at the tip of the famous Cape Kidnappers.
A Gold medal winner at both the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards and the National Wine Awards of Aotearoa plus 95/100 by Cam Douglas MS who said “Opaque core of dark purple and ruby at the rim lead to an intense bouquet of dark berries and chocolate, violets, sweet meats and clove, boysenberry and toasty smoky wood. Dry and totally delicious on the palate with flavours that mirror the bouquet. Firm tannins with polish and power, a backbone of acidity and core of varietal fruit flavours. Taut and dry with best drinking from 2027 through 2035+.”
Tim and winemaker Matt have this to say about the latest ’24 release – “Floral aromas, a deep inky hue with earthy beetroot & dark plum flavours & fine tannins. As the Malbec vines mature the wine made from them becomes more concentrated & complex. The grapes for this wine have been selectively picked. Aged predominantly in seasoned oak barriques prior to bottling.”
