Nobody has a love affair with Hawke’s Bay wine (especially Chardonnay!) quite like Tim Turvey, the main man at Clearview Estate. He has a stellar line up of wines including his world famous Reserve label (listed as in Michael Cooper’s prestigious “Super Classics” list) and while it’s Chardonnay that he’s best known for his Old Olive Block label has become an iconic, premium Hawke’s Bay red.
That’s despite being told back in 1988 that it was too cold to grow grapes at the Te Awanga location in Hawkes Bay. Boy, did he show them!
Named after a 100+ year old olive tree that was originally planted there by the pioneering Vidal family. A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend (78%) with Cabernet Franc (12%), Merlot (7%) and Syrah (3%) making up the rest of the blend – all from a cracker 2024 Hawke’s Bay vintage!
Tim and winemaker Matt have this to say about the latest ’24 release – “Te Awanga fruit blended with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels road area produces a classic full bodied wine. Cabernet’s cassis flavours drive this dense and opulent wine. Natural acidity along with tannins and fruit allow this wine to age beyond a decade.”
