And who’d argue with them. Definitely not the judges at the largest and most influential wine competition on the planet – The Decanter World Wine Awards in London who awarded it Gold and 96/100. Winning Gold and 95/100 at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London is a pretty bloody big deal – from over 19,000 wines entered a mere 4% of wines won Gold. This was one of them and joined just 62 other Aussie wines to win Gold.

Medium crimson with vibrant raspberry, blackberry and blueberry aromas, with baking spices, peppercorn, graphite, dried citrus rind and purple florals. Juicy, dark and blue fruits on the palate with the most powdery of tannin clouds, bright acidity and a long draw of juicy, spicy fruit. It’s just so damn easy to drink. Woah!”

“Medium-deep crimson. Lovely raspberry, blackberry pastille aromas with roasted walnut, hint peppery notes. Red and black fruits on the palate with roasted nut, hint wax polish notes. Finishes chalky/ al dente firm and crunchy with peppery/ spicy notes. Lovely fruit complexity and vigour. A cracker at this price point. Drink now–2030” 

This is 47% Old Vine Grenache (the hero of this Barossa GSM!), 28% elegant Syrah and 25% spicy Mourvedre and aged for 9 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads.

The Chaffey Bros are brothers-in-law Daniel Chaffey & Theo Engela along with young gun winemaker Huon Fechner. They describe themselves as part perfumiers, part historians and part mad scientists.

“We craft our handmade wines from a number of epic low-yielding vineyards nestled among the pristine Barossa & Eden Valleys in South Australia. Our wine philosophy is ‘New Wave Barossa’… Soil up. Our main varietal pillars: Old vine Barossa Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre along with aromatic Germanic white grapes from Eden Valley (Riesling, Kerner, Gewürztraminer).”
