A stunning bottle of red with a jaw dropping 97/100 and Platinum Award at the world’s biggest and most influential wine show on the planet – the Decanter World Wine Awards in London. BUT, and this is your heads up, there’s only a tiny allocation for the NZ market so you’ll need to get a shuffle on before it sells out.

The wine is called Agramont Graciano 2021 and before we crack into what the wine is and what it’s all about, let’s cut to the chase. This wine has been recognised as a “Platinum and 97/100” winner (and 1 of the best 10 Spanish wines) from the DWWA in London.

That’s absolutely incredible achievement for a wine up for grabs under $25! Winning Platinum at the DWWA is no easy road that’s for sure. After joining some 15,000 other wines they are then awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze –  the rest are shown the door! Then the best of the best go toe-to-toe to determine the Platinum award winners. Only 163 wines globally won Platinum – or put it another way that’s just 1% of the 15,000 wines entered.

The DWWA judges said “Focused herbal, wild black fruit and tobacco nose. The youthful palate is poised and approachable with soft texture, high tannins and brisk acidity. It has an intensity of flavour in the mouth and an energetic, impressively long finish. A very accomplished expression of Graciano. The value here is superb”.

Best known as the blending grape in Rioja alongside Tempranillo and Garnacha, Graciano is fast getting reputation as a stellar single-varietal wine. Famous wine critic Jancis Robinson calls Graciano “Rare, but fine and perfumed…its absence in modern Rioja blends helps to explain some of the qualitive difference between the great rioja’s of then and now”.

A full bodied and rich red with intense, aromatic and spicy flavours. This really is a treat so branch out and try something new!

If you’re looking to pair it with a feed it’ll pair nicely with a variety of dishes including seafood, chicken, spicy pasta, spicy sausage and lamb or Spanish chorizo.
