The 40th release of New Zealand’s most famous red wine is here! It was over 120 years ago that Te Mata planted Cabernet vines in the Havelock Hills in Hawke’s Bay, Te Mata Estate Coleraine (pronounced “Cole-raine” rather than “Coler-aine”) was first produced in 1982 and today is widely thought of as one of the best red wines produced in New Zealand.

This is the latest 2024 vintage and after the challenges of the 2023 vintage this vintage was what made in Hawke’s Bay would call legendary!

Using all estate grown fruit and bottled on the estate too, nothing is left to chance. Aged 19 months in French oak (70% expensive new oak) the final blend of Coleraine ’24 is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. It is every bit the world class wine you come to expect – a wine with complexity, power and elegance. Boy, this is some wine!

Te Mata’s meticulous attention to detail year after year does not go unnoticed around the world that’s for sure. Decanter magazine declared Coleraine as “New Zealand’s First Growth”, a phrase in reference to the top wines of Bordeaux based on reputation and price. The massive praise doesn’t end there either…

“All changed when Coleraine hit the market. No one had dreamed such a wine could be made from New Zealand grapes” – Bob Campbell MW
“A national treasure” – Jancis Robinson MW
“There is no denying that Coleraine has been NZ’s ‘Latour’ for a while.” – Matthew Jukes
“I would have no hesitation placing it within the class of Bordeaux second growths” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“New Zealand’s greatest red wine” – Raymond Chan
“Wine legend – the most avidly collected of New Zealand red wines” – Decanter magazine
“A legendary Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend of New Zealand” – James Suckling

100/100 (Sam Kim)
“This is a masterpiece, much like a great work of art. The bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, bouquet garni, baking spice, rich floral, and cedar characters. It’s concentrated with exceptional depth and mouth-coating texture, wonderfully framed by finely polished tannins. It’s perfectly proportioned and gracefully powerful, combining scintillating fruit purity with seductive complexity. The wine flows seamlessly to a persistent, structured finish.”

98/100 (Huon Hooke MW, The Real Review)
“Deep and bright, bold purple-red colour; fabulous cranberry, violet and cassis aromas, the fruit bursting from the glass. The same flavours saturate the palate which is beautifuly balanced by abundant fine-grained tannins that run the full length of the palate and provide a very long lasting and resonant farewell. Oak is so well handled as to be only just perceptible, adding to the cedary touches. An utterly delicious cabernet blend and a top vintage of this wine.”

98/100 (James Suckling)
“Superlative balance. Aromas of blackberries, currants, blueberries, graphite and dark tobacco with hints of bark, violets and licorice. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine velvety tannins and a seamless, cashmere texture. So caressing and polished. Bright and vivid at the end. 58% cabernet sauvignon. 31% merlot and 11% cabernet franc. Will be released March 1. You could drink this tonight and enjoy it, but it will age.”

97/100 (Gary Walsh, The Wine Front)
“This vintage puts me in mind of the mighty 2020; that sort of depth and concentration, though it has some of the acid cut of 2021 in the mix too. An exceptional wine. It will keep, probably, for as long as you want to keep it, if you can keep your hands off it, that is.”

97/100 (Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review)
“Everything is precisely balanced and polished to sleekness.”

The Te Mata crew are also extremely excited by this latest release, even if they do say so themselves! “Coleraine ’24 is exceptional. The 40th release, coinciding with the 130th vintage at Te Mata Estate is the best yet. There is a new precision here, a sense of architecture in the tannins and a luminous depth in the fruit, which reveals an exceptional Coleraine.”

Hardcore Coleraine collectors – now is not the time to leave a gap in the cellar! The 2024 is yet another one for the ages. If Coleraine is yet to sit in your cellar – there’s no better time to start than now! This is the wine that made history and broke records not so long ago with a thirty-two vintage collection fetching an eye watering $19,000 at auction – almost $600 per bottle! Cha-ching!

Named after the town in Northern Ireland where Te Mata Estate owner John Buck’s grandfather was born and first produced in 1982. This famous Bordeaux style red is presented in individually wrapped in Coleraine branded, vintage dated tissue and will comfortably sit in your cellar for 10-15 years.
