The 36th release of New Zealand’s most famous red wine is here! It was 120 years ago that Te Mata planted Cabernet vines in the Havelock Hills in Hawke’s Bay, Coleraine was first produced in 1982 and today  is widely thought of as one of the best red wines produced in NZ.

There’s a lot to get excited about with this 2020 vintage release – a vintage that the guys at Te Mata declaring “2020 was our driest fruit-growing season on record. This gave us pristine fruit with intense levels of
concentration. Using the latest fine-wine technology, Te Mata was able to capture the finest qualities of
our Hawke’s Bay estate with a new level of control and precision

Using all estate grown fruit and bottled on the estate too, nothing is left to chance. Aged 17 months in French oak the final blend of Coleraine ’20 is 57% Cabernet, 36% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. It is every bit the world class wine you come to expect – high concentration, high energy, complexity, power and elegance. Boy, this is some wine!

Te Mata’s meticulous attention to detail year after year does not go unnoticed around the world that’s for sure. Decanter magazine declared Coleraine as “New Zealand’s First Growth”, a phrase in reference to the top wines of Bordeaux based on reputation and price. The massive praise doesn’t end there either…

“All changed when Coleraine hit the market. No one had dreamed such a wine could be made from New Zealand grapes” – Bob Campbell MW
“A national treasure” – Jancis Robinson MW
“New Zealand’s greatest red wine” – Raymond Chan
“Wine legend – the most avidly collected of New Zealand red wines” – Decanter magazine
“A legendary Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend of New Zealand” – James Suckling
“I would have no hesitation placing it within the class of Bordeaux second growths” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

And check out the 2020 vintage reviews to date…
5 Stars, 98/100 (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“A deeply-tinted, almost inky wine with layers of sumptuous fruit and savoury characters, including cassis, red rose, dark chocolate, hedgerow, anise and nutty oak. A generously proportioned, youthful red that is already surprisingly accessible but promises to age gracefully.”

    5 Stars, 100/100 (Sam Kim)
” Beautifully layered with formidable depth and seductive texture, making this rendition of Coleraine
    undeniably spellbinding. 2030 to 2050.”

    5 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“A wine of rare breed, this distinguished claret-style red is dark and powerful.”

97/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“A sensational cabernet blend, gorgeously flavoured and perfumed, profound and lingering. It has the intensity and structure to age long-term. The patient will be handsomely rewarded.”

98/100 (Gary Walsh, The Wine Front)
“Unbelievably good. Young, but the potential is overwhelmingly potent.”
