There’s no place in Australia that produces quality Cabernet quite like the Coonawarra. Famous for its red cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa (that’s Italian for ‘red soil’) and stretching from north to south, this important stretch of land is among the most valuable patches of soil in the Aussie wine world!
In amongst the ‘Cigar’ is The Menzies vineyard. Established in 1975 it’s Yalumba’s pride and joy when it comes to producing first class Cabernet.
This is The Cigar 2022 vintage and we’ve got one word to describe it – smokin!
Here’s what a couple of the top critics across the ditch had to say…
95/100 & Special Value Award (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Named for the strip of Terra Rossa soils shaped like a cigar that runs through Coonawarra. As it is with the power of suggestion, the Cigar invokes the savoury spices of tobacco, cedar and sandalwood. It’s layered with bilberries, blackcurrants and prunes, too. Some coffee and poppy seed tones. It is a wine in the Yalumba line-up that stands out for its heavily laden spices and muscular tannins. Oak is significant and will allow the wine longevity in the cellar. If you gravitate to the seduction of quality fruit and richness of oak, this is for you.”
93/100 & Top Rank Award (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review)
“Briary, brambly, cassis, dark plum, ferrous earth, cedar, spice and dried herbs. Textured, layered, mouth-filling and long. Lashings of briary dark fruits, nutty oak, granular tannin and snappy acidity. Poised, polished and classic cabernet.”
Aged for 18 months in 18% expensive new French oak. A deep, dark purple tint in the glass this is a seriously good, full bodied Cabernet with structure and style! It’s a beauty!
Drink now or chuck it in the cellar and watch it evolve – this should be good to cellar up to 15 years from vintage.
