Penfolds RWT Shiraz, also known as Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz, was released after several years of red wine making trials (thus the name RWT – Red Wine-making Trials) this was a result of demand for 100 per cent Barossa Shiraz back in the 90’s. Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz

Launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage, it’s obviously no longer a trial! Penfolds wines are built for longevity and this wine is no exception, you will be rewarded with patience. As you’d expect it’s received some mighty scores from the cream of the crop of Aussie critics…

98/100 & Top Rank Award (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Very deep, dark red/black colour laced with purple; there are toasted-nut oaky notes—walnut, spices including mace and nutmeg, the palate rich and concentrated with massive flavour depth and aplomb. Mouth-coating tannins which are supple and smooth, fleshy and rich, a sumptuous wine which will be glorious to drink way into the future.”

96/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Penfolds’ ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, which launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage, has built a solid reputation for its harmonious, concentrated wines that have the ability to age beautifully in the cellar. Deep purple-splashed crimson in the glass with finely tuned aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruits, along with baking spices, violets, dark chocolate, espresso, crushed earth, anise, cedar, dried meats and bay leaf. Full bodied and fruit pure, with a velvety gradient across its length, a beautiful flow of fruit, fine melt-in-the-mouth tannins and a bright, fresh mineral cadence. It’s a wonderful, harmonious release that will repay the patient.”

97/100 (James Suckling)
“Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz: There’s an immediate feel of class and intensity here with a high level of sophistication. Aromas of blood plum, blackberries, bitter chocolate, walnut, mint and violets. The palate balances freshness and intensity with firm yet silky tannins, bright acidity and an unctuous, velvety mouthfeel packed with dark fruits, spice, coffee bean, ash and a ferric earthy undertone. Decades ahead here, although it’s hard not to love it right now. Drink or hold.”

Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz is a great alternative (price wise) to Penfolds Grange. The grapes for RWT are sourced entirely from the Barossa Valley while Grange is a multi-regional blend. Highly collectable with serious cellaring potential – up to 20-25 years from vintage!
