It’s the home to some of Italy’s most flavoursome and best value reds, it’s picture perfect postcard stuff and it looks a lot like the heel of a boot when you look at it on a map – we’re talking about southern Italy, Puglia to be precise.

It’s where Zoll aPrimitivo comes from, made by the Vigneti del Salento crew (who are part of the mammoth Farnese wine group in Italy).

Primitivo is the grape and it’s the same grape as Zinfandel (also just called Zin) which is the signature style in places like California. Primitivo actually means “early ripening” which is why this style results in wines that are medium to full bodied, luscious and full of spicy fruit flavours like dark berry and cherry.

Pronouncing Italian wine names can be a bit of a mouthful, but don’t let it put you off!

Vigneti del Salento (pronounced vin-nee-etty del sal-ento) is the producer
Zolla (pronounced zo-lar) is the name of the label
Primitivo (pronounced prim-ih-tee-voh) is the grape

IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) is the third level of a four tier Italian wine classification system (DOCG, DOC, IGP/IGT and finally Vino da Tavola, table wine or as we call it…plonk for plonkers!)

Best paired with rustic Italian fare – grilled red meats, fresh veggies, tomato based pasta dishes. Or if you want to keep it Kiwi try alongside roast lamb with wild thyme and roast potatoes! Buon appetite!
