We all know that Spanish reds deliver such amazing bang for buck – the Anciano label has been doing it year after year and here they are yet again with this 2018 release!

The grape is Tempranillo (pronounced temp-rah-knee-oh) and it’s the specialty in this part of the wine world. Produced from the Valencia region of Spain with legendary Master of Wine Norrel Robertson lending a hand with the winemaking.

According to strict Spanish wine laws to be labelled as “Crianza” it has to spend a minimum of 24 months aging, of which at least 6 months has to be in oak. This has had 12 months in oak and three years in the cellar before release.

There’s no need to do any more cellaring. Just cut off the fancy gold wire wrap, pop out the cork and enjoy this medium bodied red with delicious savoury red fruit flavours and smooth tannins.

A perfectly aged European red that looks and tastes the part, a bargain price and backed by an importer who just happens to be an NZ Master of Wine! What more could you want? How about a 4 1/2 Star, 91/100 rating from local critic Sam Kim? Oh go on then…

“Sweetly ripe and complex with spiced cherry, hazelnut, orange peel and nutmeg aromas, it’s juicy and supple in the mouth displaying smooth texture and rounded mouthfeel. Attractively fruited with spicy nuances, offering charming drinking.”

If you’re haven’t tried this wine before it’s time to hop on board and see what the fuss is all about! Grab a case and enjoy with lamb, casseroles and other grilled red meats.
