Gold medal, 95/100 & Top Value Gold (Decanter World Wine Awards, London 2026)
“Enticing florals, creamy red-and-blue fruits and hints of white pepper bring charm and breadth. Darting acidity, fine tannins and ample purity mark the palate.”

92/100 & Top Value Award (Halliday’s Wine Companion)
This is a pretty intense and serious wine for the money. Red and blue fruits, some black olive and ground anise, cracked pepper and a whisper of bay, the palate silky, slinky, so textural and supple, tannins refined, and the length sustained. Without doubt, the current Church Block trio represents some of the best quality-to-price-ratio wines in the country.”

92/100 (WinePilot.com)
“It’s fleshy and juicy with just the faintest of earthy tannin dustings in the palate. Given the current love story with Grenache, this should go gangbusters, and deservedly so.”

92/100 (Campbell Mattinson)
“Wirra Wirra’s Church Block Grenache Shiraz 2024 is a wonderful offering. In fact it’s a great example of the joy of blending; this wine essentially tastes of grenache, all red berried and bright, but then there are darker more blueberry-and-plum characters, which give the wine an extra boost. Spice, raspberry and violet; these characters apply. It’s a happy drink. It’s juicy. It’s dry where it needs to be. It’s very good.

92/100 (James Suckling)
“Medium-bodied with fine tannins and balanced acidity, giving plenty of purple and blue fruit with undertones of flowers and spices.”

The Church Block was the first wine produced by Wirra Wirra’s founder Greg Trott back in 1972 – named after one of the original vineyards that runs alongside a small church built in the 1850s. In fact the original Church Block wines were Grenache Shiraz blends produced in the 70s before it became a Cabernet lead wine in the 80s onwards. After five decades (and a huge growth in love of Grenache!) Wirra Wirra are bringing it back.

A 60/40 blend of juicy, bright red berry Grenache and the more full bodied, darker, spicy McLaren Vale Shiraz. These guys have been a label to keep an eye on in recent years, producing some seriously smart reds and extremely wallet-friendly prices. That might have something to do with Wirra Wirra’s winemaker being the super talented, ex-Penfolds winemaker Emma Wood.

Pair Wirra Wirra Church Block Grenache Shiraz with duck, barbecued red meats and or a mushroom rissotto. Drink now to 5-6 years from vintage.
