It’s not hard to see why for generations the wine world has guzzled Montepulciano in big numbers and still does today. An easy drinking, medium bodied style with ripe, soft and juicy red berry fruit flavours. This is highly drinkable Montepulciano (mon-ta-pull-cheeanno) from the d’Abruzzo region of Italy landing on your table at a very reasonable price!
This is Umani Ronchi Podere Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from the 2024 vintage and it featured in Michael Cooper’s NZ Listener article – “Top international wines to try, and not just from Australia”
Cooper said “From Italy’s Adriatic coast, this deeply coloured red shows loads of personality. Designed as an easy-drinking, vibrantly fruity style, it has strong, ripe plum, red berry and spice flavours, fresh acidity and supple tannins. Earthy and savoury notes add complexity. Best drinking 2028+. $20-$24”
Meanwhile international critic James Suckling scored it 91/100 and said “Fresh and fruity, with clean black and red berries, together with hints of plum skin and herbs. Medium body with lightly firm tannins and a medium finish. A good, everyday red.”
Umani Ronchi Podere Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is perfecto with grilled vegetables, pizza, pasta or with lamb skewers.
