Go the full Monte…Monte Giove! Or more specifially with the Monte Giove Sangiovese Merlot, given the tick of approval and imported by an NZ Master of Wine Steve Bennett.

If you know anything about Italian reds you’ll know Sangiovese is one of the most loved grapes in that part of the wine world. It’s the grape behind the famous wines of Chianti.

Winemaker Scipione Giuliani has blended 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot from grapes grown in the Rubicone river region of northeastern Italy. He’s crafted this delicious medium bodied, savory, dry style red so typical of reds from this part of the wine world. It’s all soft, juicy berry and cherry fruit flavours and a touch of spice.

It’s got thumbs up from a swag of local critics…

    4 1/2 Stars, 90/100 (Sam Kim)
“Sweet cherry, dried herb, clove and almond characters, followed by a juicy palate that’s bright and refreshing. It’s elegantly weighted and lingering with fine, chalky tannins, making the wine firm and well structured. At its best: now to 2022”

    88/100 (Bob Campbell MW)
“A blend of sangiovese and merlot. from the central Italy region of Emilia-Romagna. A mellow, fruity and accessible wine with floral, grape stem, red berry and subtle spicy flavours supported by drying, sappy tannins. Moderately austere and best with food. Very good value at this price ($16).”

    Recommended (Paul Tudor MW)
“A canny blend of Italy’s most famous variety with Bordeaux’s most planted, the bouquet features Sangiovese’s savoury tomato characters, along with warm, spicy notes…Above the ordinary & outstanding value for money.”

Go the full Monte in the kitchen and pair it with pizzas, pastas, charcuterie and mature hard cheeses.
