Made by Matua, a household winemaking name in Aotearoa since around the 60s. While they’re still a pretty commercial producer these days, there are bargains to be found in good vintages, and this is one of ’em!
This 2019 release Marlborough Pinot Noir raised a few eye brows at the NZ International Wine Show in 2020 when it scored Double Gold, alongside some heavy hitters like Central Otago’s Rockburn and Gibbston Valley.
Scoring Double Gold means it got a unanimous Gold medal rating from the Chief Judge, the three assistant Chief Judges and the three Senior Judges – it also means it was in the running for the overall Trophy for Champion Pinot. It got pipped to the post for that award, but heck for a little over $15 this is some smart buying!
A juicy, medium bodied style, it’s all berry and dark cherry fruit flavours with supply tannins and a soft, silky finish. It’s clearly punching above its weight for the money! Easy to slug back a glass or two by itself or pair with game meats like duck, venison or a cut of Kiwi lamb.
