Just 15km down the road from the Clare Valley is the township of Watervale. This village has a tiny population of around 250 but a massive reputation for kick ass Riesling!
And Riesling from the Watervale doesn’t come much more iconic than the Jim Barry Watervale Riesling. They’ve been producing this Riesling for over 50 years now with the first vintage in 1974. The Florita vineyard used for this one was a vineyard originally planted in 1946 to make Fino Sherry but replanted in 1962 for Riesling.
A crisp, zippy and zesty dry style white you could easily find yourself knocking back with gusto in the warmer months. But honestly, this is just such a gorgeously easy style, lower in alcohol white to slurp any time of the year.
The Jim Barry crew describe it as “Delicate. Fragrant. Elegant. And a classic Watervale musk”
This latest 2024 release is yet again on the money, here’s a snippet of what the critics have had to say…
93/100 Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
“This seems to be a very good JB Riesling. Lemongrass, lime leaf, lime, a bit floral and spicy…it’s frisky and delicious.”
93/100 Erin Larkin (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)
“The 2024 Watervale Riesling is utterly lovely, classic Clare Riesling, with cut lime, green apple, juicy acidity and just a little hint of cheesecloth/lees complexity in the mouth. 2024 was a variable vintage, but those who succeeded did so with aplomb.”
92/100 Dave Sly (Decanter)
“It’s pale – almost translucent – and bone dry with a distinct juiciness that allows its lively lemon-and-lime flavours to pop.”
91/100 Mike Bennie (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“A simple, done-well expression of riesling with vivacious lemon-lime Splice fruit characters married to gingery spice, a touch of grassiness, some just-ripe pineapple and a flinty, mineral tickle. Succulent, refreshing, good drinking.”
91/100 & Top Value Award (Stuart Knox, The Real Review)
“Virtually water-white in the glass. Lemon zest and seaspray aromatics. Zippy and fresh with a core of lemon and lime fruits…Great value here.”
Riesling is well known to be a white that cellars well. Drink this now to 10-12 years from vintage.
