There’s a very special bottle of wine hiding at the Tintara winery in the McLaren Vale. Yep, there’ll be a few cases of 2017 release Shiraz – but the bottle we’re talking about is a bit older than that. Try an 1867 Tintara Vineyard Claret – the oldest surviving bottle of Australian wine!

They hold the record after an 1864 bottle of Pewsey Vale Cabernet Sauvignon was accidentally smashed by a cleaner! Oh dear!

Formerly known as the Tintara Vineyard Company they opened their doors in 1861 but by the 1870s they hit the skids and sold up to Thomas Hardy & Sons, now known as the global wine giants Hardys. They still produce wine from the original Tintara site.

A medium to full bodied style with heaps of delicious juicy, rich dark berry fruit flavours. Still in its youth and drinking well now but this has potential for cellaring for a good 10-15 years. Or try holding on to it for 150+ years and see if you can break the record (not the bottle).

    The Lowdown: 14% alc / 750ml / Screwcap
