The Clayvin Vineyard in Marlborough was established in 1993 and quite frankly can boast producing some of the best Pinot Noir (and Chardonnay) in Aotearoa.
Giesen’s Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Clayvin vineyard sits among NZ’s elite Pinot names – typically selling in $60-65 price bracket.
They don’t cut any corners when it comes to this Pinot. Only one bottle of Clayvin Pinot Noir can be produced per vine, all the fruit is hand picked and basket pressed, an expensive and labour intense winemaking technique to ensure high quality. Then matured in 100% French Oak 300L Hogsheads with 30% expensive new oak.
This latest 2024 vintage scored a seriously good 97/100 with international critic James Suckling who said “You can see the beautiful quality of the Clayvin Vineyard in this medium-bodied wine, showing strawberries, cherries and hints of spices and flint with a bright finish. A tannin-driven pinot from Marlborough: uncommon for the region but not unexpected from this great site. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
A full bodied, rich, complex style – this is one for the true Pinot lovers. Enjoy and savour it now, but it’ll be good to be kept tucked away in the cellar up for 10-15 years from vintage.
