“Gamay is the most exciting red wine grape in the world right now” (Jamie Goode, award-winning wine writer and critic)
“Gamay is the grape that everyone is talking about” (Kermit Lynch, renowned wine importer)
“Gamay is the new Pinot Noir.” (Jordan Mackay, award-winning wine writer)
“You’ll never bother with Beaujolais again for the price.” (Steve Bennett, NZ Master of Wine & Importer)
If you’re new to the exciting world of Gamay – what a time and place to start!
“Extrait de Terre” means ‘Extract of the Land’ and winemaking in the Cotes du Tarn sub region of south west France (around the town of Gaillac and some 50km from Toulouse) dates back over 2000 years and was one of the two Grand Crus of Roman Gaul.
In this part of the wine world Gamay is the flagship grape (the same used in Beaujolais). The cool evenings here help produced light to medium bodied, fragrant, perfumed and highly drinkable reds. This wine from family owned producer Alain Gayrel is a bang on example of a modern, fruit driven Gamay and will have massive appeal to Pinot Noir drinkers and lovers of juicy, fruit-forward reds. It’s got the thumbs up from several local critics who popped the top off a bottle to try…
5 Stars, 93/100 (Sam Kim)
“It’s succulent and plump in the mouth, offering terrific weight and silky flow. Flavoursome and delectable with a long, satisfying finish.”
92/100 (Cam Douglas MS)
“Bold and expressive bouquet. Plump, ripe red berry flavours. Balanced, juicy & well made.”
90/100 (Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review)
“A juicy and charming wine for drinking young—forward, rather than deep and complex, but easy to like.”
Imported into NZ by Master of Wine Steve Bennett – he’s made a career out of sourcing wine bargains from every corner of the globe and he’s landed another one right here. A style that’s hard to not love. You can lightly chill it in the warmer months and during the cooler months it makes a good match for savory and even spicy food.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
