One of the most iconic Chardonnays this country produces from a second successive amazing vintage (2014) in Hawke’s Bay!
TOM is the pinnacle of winemaking at Church Road and only ever released in the very best of vintages (the last two vintages being ’10 and ’13). So when Church Road chief wine winemaker Chris Scott says this vintage is “An exceptional year for Hawke’s Bay” you know it’s time for TOM.
TOM is Church Road’s tribute to one of New Zealand’s winemaking legends, Tom McDonald. The very best parcels of fruit from their Tuki Tuki vineyard, hand harvested and hand sorted, a meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the winemaking process, aged for 21 months in oak, a complex and finely textured Chardonnay. A legendary wine that’s a fitting tribute for a legendary bloke.
Tom released NZ’s first commercial Cabernet Sauvignon in 1949, in later years pioneering New Zealand Chardonnay. By the 1960’s his Cabernets were being compared to some of the First Growth wines of Bordeaux. So yep, there’s certainly a bit of pressure when it comes to a release under the TOM label!
But Church Road’s chief winemaker Chris Scott is certainly pretty excited about this release, and why wouldn’t you be! “TOM is only made in exceptional vintages. Small parcels from our best Chardonnay blocks are grown, harvested and blended to create a wine of exceptional character and longevity. The Church Road TOM Chardonnay 2014 is predominantly grown on our Tuki Tuki Estate, a site that was originally established by Tom.”
Each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a stunning Church Road TOM gift box. It’s a true collector’s item and if you can tuck it away in the cellar for the long term and resist busting it out to show off to your wine buff mates, you’ll be rewarded. Recommended drinking for this one is 2018 to 2026.
