Tempranillo (pronounced temp-rah-knee-oh) might be the native grape of Spain (and supposedly the fourth most planted variety on the planet!) but that ain’t stopping a growing number of NZ producers having a dabble at it.
This is Church Road’s “Editions” series – a collection of rare and interesting varieties that are less common on wine shelves in Aotearoa.
We were bloody excited to try “Editions No.1 – Tempranillo” by Church Road – and it didn’t disappoint! As Church Road describe it “The early ripening Tempranillo has found a ready home here in Hawke’s Bay, grown on our Redstone vineyard this is a typically textural, dark fruited and harmonious red wine, enhanced by 18 months maturation in French oak.”
In fact we couldn’t help but think if they put some of that fancy looking Spanish gold wire wrap around the bottle you’d swear you’re drinking a Rioja Reserva from the heart of Spain!
Branch out and try something different! This class act will pair well with a whole range of dishes like game meats, pizzas, pastas, cured meats and Mexican food like nachos and burritos!
