An absolutely cracking value Central Otago Pinot Noir for a little over $20 that certainly tastes like a Pinot worth much, much more!
Maybe that’s because it’s 100% estate grown Gibbston Valley fruit and produced on-site with 20% whole cluster and aged in 40% expensive new French oak and matured for 11 months with no fining or filtration. What does that all mean? It means it’s made to the specs typical of a Pinot you’d expect to shell out a LOT more for!
Maybe because it’s made by one of our favourite boutique Central Otago producers who have previously provided fruit to some other big names in the region like Peregrine.
The wine’s made by Sean Brennan of Brennan wines and his family first planted vines in Gibbston over 20 years ago. Since then they’ve gone on to produce a long list of award winning Pinots over the years, including previously winning “Best Business Class Red Wine” for their B2 Pinot Noir served on board Air New Zealand to the Business Class elite.
In 2021 the guys at Brennan ended up with a surplus of high quality fruit. After allocating barrels to their Brennan Pinot Noir ($60+) and B2 label ($30+) they found the fruit left over was of an amazingly high standard. Very confident the fruit seriously over delivered for the price point they decided to label the rest as Brennan Misfits!
As for the label design itself. Well, that was the work of a young girl sitting next to Sean on board an Air NZ flight from Christchurch to Queenstown. Doodling on her iPad, Sean made comment about his need for a new label, hey presto 15 minutes later this young lass had come up with the new Misfits label (apparently Mum & Dad have been well compensated for her work…possibly payment in Pinot!).
And how did the Brennan crew feel about this latest 2021 release? “Immediately enticing, this wine shows fresh raspberry, vanilla bean and hickory smoke on the nose and on the palate. The feeling of the wine is a luscious one, with a fine finish that screams Gibbston, Central Otago.”
It’s everything we love about good quality Central Pinot – and not the juicy, easy drinking stuff you’d normally get for this price point. This is a gorgeously luscious Pinot full of rich, dark berry fruit, spicy flavours. It’s got the obvious complexity to be cellared for a few years yet too.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
