Winner of Michael Cooper’s Best Buy Red Wine in his 2020 Wine Buyer’s Guide! Think of it as the NZ wine bible. He slurps his way through over 3,000 wines (tough job right?) and at the end picks his overall best value white and red.
Alexander Dusty Road Pinot Noir 2018 from Martinborough is Michael’s Best Buy Red for the year. Scribbling his notes while enjoy a glass (or maybe two) of this rich, savoury, spicy Martinbrough Pinot Cooper said…
“On a quality level that matches many Pinot Noirs in the NZ$40-NZ$45 category, this estate-grown red was hand-picked and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Bright ruby, it has a fragrant, savoury bouquet. Designed for early drinking, but also age-worthy, it is mouthfilling, with concentrated, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, showing good complexity. At NZ$27, it’s a steal.”
From a boutique Martinborough (that’s the Wairarapa…aka north of Wellington) family owned and operated estate run by Michael Finucane and Roz Walker. Michael admits “I’m very cynical about wine competitions“. Shhhhh…don’t tell him, but his wine has also won a Gold medal at the NZ International Wine Show 2019!
This’ll comfortably cellar for several years yet so enjoy some now, tuck some away for another day.
