Another incredible, jaw dropping winery clearance deal from the latest wine brand of Villa Maria founder and NZ wine industry legend Sir George Fistonich. But in a sign of bloody tough international and domestic economic conditions the Fistonich team have made the tough call to cull final stocks of this multi award winning, Gimblett Gravels Cabernet blend down to an utterly bonkers price of $12.99!
Mark our words. This was NOT a wine made to sell anywhere near the $12.99 price point, but here we are. Initially launched into the market as a premium wine brand to sit in the $25-30 price bracket extremely tough market conditions means this is now up for grabs at a price we likely won’t see again under this label!
A Bordeaux style red blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 5% Malbec – all entirely sourced from the iconic Cornerstone Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay. This vineyard is one of the region’s most famous and one the Fistonich team call their “jewel in the crown”. As one critic once put it – “This famous vineyard is planted on stony, gravelly soils and produces structural, rich flavoured fruit.” In fact fruit from this very vineyard (purchased by another wine maker for his own wine brand) was used for a super premium Cabernet that was recently short listed for “Red Wine of the Year New Zealand 2026” in The Real Review!
No corners cut in the wine making either – 100% of the blend was aged in French Oak barrels for 10 months of which 30% was expensive new oak! As the winemaker puts it – “Indulge in the rich flavours of this Cabernet Sauvignon blend, where dark cherry and chocolate notes take centre stage with layers of ripe fruit and a touch of spice”
It’s also got the backing of wine critics here and overseas…
4 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“Offering great drinkability, this medium-bodied red is fresh and energetic, with blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours. It shows considerable complexity, and has very good depth and harmony. (12.5% alc/vol) $30-$32.”
5 Stars (Candice Chow)
“Full-bodied, aromas of cassis and blackberry show purity, entwined with mint, cedar, nutmeg and cloves.”
93/100 (Cam Douglas MS)
“A distinctive bouquet and palate filled with flavours of blackberry fruits and boysenberry, dark plums, chocolate and smoky barrel spices.”
92/100 (James Suckling)
“A classic Bordeaux blend with aromas of underbrush, dried herbs, dark berries, cassis and sweet tobacco. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins, succulent fruit and a concentrated, flavorful finish. Beautifully balanced.”
91/100 (Sam Kim)
“Succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and polished tannins, finishing juicy and lingering”
This really is an absolute no brainer for the price. The Fistonich crew reckon to pair it with “hearty dishes like grilled steak or rich pasta“. Drink now or cellar until 7-8 years from vintage.
