Another incredible, jaw dropping winery clearance deal from the latest wine brand of Villa Maria founder and NZ wine industry legend Sir George Fistonich. But in a sign of bloody tough international and domestic economic conditions the Fistonich team have made the tough call to cull final stocks of this 94/100 rated Hawke’s Bay Syrah blend down to an utterly bonkers price of $12.99!
Mark our words. This was NOT a wine made to sell anywhere near the $12.99 price point, but here we are. Initially launched into the market as a premium wine brand to sit in the $25-30 price bracket extremely tough market conditions means this is now up for grabs at a price we likely won’t see again under this label!
A blend of Syrah, Malbec and Viognier using high quality fruit sourced predominantly from the iconic Cornerstone Vineyard in a world famous sub region of Hawke’s Bay – this vineyard is one of the region’s most famous and one the Fistonich team call their “jewel in the crown”. As one critic once put it – “This famous vineyard is planted on stony, gravelly soils and produces structural, rich flavoured fruit.”
In fact fruit from this very vineyard (purchased by another wine maker for his own wine brand) was used for a super premium Cabernet that was recently short listed for “Red Wine of the Year New Zealand 2026” in The Real Review!
A blend of 92% Syrah, 6% Malbec and 2% Viognier. As the winemaker puts it – “The Syrah component offers ripe black berry fruit and spice notes, while the Malbec provides a structure that enhances the front palate. A splash of Viognier adds a hint of floral perfume and a softness to the finish. While this a rare varietal blend, the partners complement each other perfectly.”
Scoring 94/100 (“Excellent”) with critic Cam Douglas MS who said “A purple and ruby core with a pink rim, plenty of polish with a hint of staining in the tears. Aromas of fine power and precision, scents of blackcurrant then dark raspberry and a touch of plum. Layers of natural spice suggest a peppercorn note then wood smoke and a fine layer of baking spice with a lick of chocolate. A dry wine on the palate with a core of fruit flavours that mirror the bouquet, plenty of acidity and polished tannins frame that palate nicely. A wine that could be enjoyed from today though some cellar time will bring together all the attributes ensuring a more cohesive wine from late 2026, or early 2027 through 2033.”
This really is an absolute no brainer for the price. The Fistonich crew reckon to pair it with “grilled meats or rich pasta for a delightful experience.“
